A Formula E car. Straight through Arnhem. One single take.
A high end film and photography project combining motorsport, urban space and sustainable innovation.
During Arnhem Electricity Week, Formula E driver Nyck de Vries drove his electric race car through the city of Arnhem, passing regular traffic and some of the city’s most iconic locations. The route led across the John Frost Bridge, through Sonsbeek Park, past the GelreDome and along Arnhem’s characteristic trolleybus infrastructure, highlighting the city’s long-standing connection to electric mobility and innovation.
The project was executed as a single continuous take, filmed in broad daylight in a fully functioning urban environment. Achieving this required more than a year of preparation, detailed planning and precise coordination. Every camera position, drone movement and vehicle interaction was carefully mapped out in advance, as there was only one opportunity to capture the complete sequence. The result is a strong example of long-form visual storytelling within an editorial photography context.
As the stills photographer on this production, I documented the project from within a complex and fast-moving film set. Working alongside camera operators, drone teams including an FPV pilot, and a camera car with crane setup, I focused on capturing the scale, precision and atmosphere of the production as it unfolded throughout the city. The photography combines elements of events photography with a documentary approach, capturing real moments in a live production environment.
Beyond the motorsport spectacle, the project positions Formula E as a symbol of the energy transition, a movement deeply connected to Arnhem’s identity. From its electric public transport system to the innovative companies based in the region, the city continues to play a leading role in sustainable technology. The photography serves both as commissioned work and as part of ongoing personal projects exploring movement, technology and urban space.
